In my opinion, technology has had a significant impact on education and on us, both positively and negatively.

One positive effect of technology in education is improved student focus and engagement. The introduction of educational games and videos can help students concentrate on difficult tasks because they make learning more enjoyable and interactive. A study published by the National Library of Medicine discusses how digital educational games can increase students’ attention and exploration. These games are also favoured by students and teachers because they provide unique and interactive learning experiences compared with traditional teaching methods.

Another example is Minecraft, which Monash University discusses as a useful educational tool. Teachers can use Minecraft to encourage students to collaborate, build, problem-solve and share ideas. It can also support different learning styles by allowing students to demonstrate their understanding visually and creatively. For

example, one student used Minecraft to design a sustainable house for a science activity. This allowed the student to explore ideas that may not have been possible using traditional materials such as cardboard. The activity encouraged deeper thinking and gave the student a sense of ownership over their design.

However, technology can also have negative effects. Social media, games and non-educational websites can easily distract students from their schoolwork. Without proper teacher guidance, students may focus more on entertainment than learning, reducing productivity and learning outcomes. Overdependence on technology may also reduce the development of basic skills, such as spelling, calculating and researching, as well as decreasing face-to-face interaction.

Technology has affected us as individuals, not only in education but also in our everyday lives, in both positive and negative ways. One positive impact technology has had on individuals is the improvement and accessibility of communication. A study from the University of Arkansas stated that before technological advancements, communication was more limited to local areas because text-based communication was not as accessible. Technology has allowed us to become more connected with our family and friends, even when they are far away. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were required to stay home and were in lockdown, technology helped us stay connected with our loved ones through applications such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. These applications allowed people to communicate and maintain relationships even though they could not meet in person.

Technology has also helped improve productivity and efficiency. The development of different technological resources has allowed businesses and individuals to increase production and complete tasks more efficiently. It has also reduced the need for manual labour in some industries, making certain tasks easier and faster to complete.

However, technology can also have negative effects on individuals. One negative impact is the difficulty of creating time and space to unwind. The constant use of technology can make it harder for people to disconnect, which can lead to stress and exhaustion. The study also discussed the negative effects technology can have on our physical and mental health. Spending too much time using technology can cause issues such as eye strain, hand or wrist pain, and sleep deprivation. Therefore, it is important to use technology responsibly and maintain a healthy balance.
